Christmas In Red

I loving looking at Christmas decor photos. There never seems to be enough to satisfy my craving for them.

I found another wonderful UK decor site that has a gallery of Christmas photos. Here's a taste of them.

No Mantel No Problem!

We don't have a mantel to hang our stockings on.

I'd hang the stockings on my foot board but it was used to make the bathroom vanity, so I've been at a loss as to how I was going to display them.

Until I found LivingEtc. I was searching through their Christmas gallery and found a unique idea for hanging stockings.

I'll add it to the Honey Do list.

Christmas in the Bathroom

I can't stop myself. There were pine cones leftover from the wreath so I wired them together for a garland to put around the bathroom mirror. Which of course led me to decorating the bathroom.

I put the pine cone wreath on the bathroom door but I'm going to switch out the red and gold bows for blue/red and silver ones. In fact I think I'm going to switch out any gold decor I have in favour of silver.

My camera casing is falling apart but it's taking pictures now. It's really hard to get a sharp shot though. Maybe Santa will win the lottery and buy me a Nikon SLR camera for Christmas.

I'm Trying

But I just can't seem to wait until December 1st to start decorating for Christmas. I am doing better than previous years. I usually have the entire house including the tree decked out by now.

Here's what I've done so far.

I'm liking where this is going but I need to come up with something to put in the mason jars. Maybe red candies or beads or something.

I just made this wreath. I got the pine cones from Freecycle and the bows from my stash of Christmas decor. Hot glued it all together. I'm not particularly fond of the bows but I'm too impatient to wait to shop for something better. It's not Martha Stewart but it'll do for my door.

That's it. Nothing crazy. Just a little smidgen of holiday decor.

Sock monkey for my little monkey.

I made my very first sock monkey following this tutorial. It's going to go in my youngest daughter's stocking. She's 7 months and likes to chew on things so my options for gifts are limited.

I don't know why I haven't made these before. Sock monkeys are so cute!

Sewing gifts for daughter #1.

My toddler's Christmas gift this year is a tickle trunk full of costumes. I started sewing this weekend and I'm almost done.

I apologize in advance for the photo quality. Between a broken camera and trying to take photos without the kids seeing, the items pictured don't look as good as in person. You'll just have to take my word that they are awesome!

Anyway, here's what I've made so far and links to tutorials where applicable.

Apron. No link here, I just made it up. This is made from a Strawberry Shortcake pillowcase I bought at the thrift shop for $2.

No sew tutu. For this one I had to buy tulle. It was $2.50 a yard and I bought two yards. My daughter picked out the colours. I ended up having to use some black tulle I had leftover from Halloween to fill it in a bit.

Wizard's cloak. I had all the materials on hand from previous projects. I used the pattern from the site linked and then added a liner of contrasting fabric to give a little bulk and to avoid hemming all the edges.

Superhero cape. Same link but without the hood. Again, made using materials I already had.

Fairy wings. Okay I didn't actually make these. You could if you wanted with a pair of panty hose and some wire but I found these for a buck at the thrift shop so I grabbed them. I did embellish them because they were so plain. I added the gems, glitter glue, butterflies and crowns. The butterflies and crowns I picked up at Dollarama.

Toddler pants. Nothing special here, just some pj type pants. Made them from some very large men's t-shirts that I picked up from the thrift shop.

I still have to make a superhero mask and wands for the wizard and fairy costumes. I might make some Christmas pj's if I can scrounge up some fabric from my stash. In addition to these costumes I also picked up various costume hats (pirate, firewoman etc) from the good old thrift shop to go in the tickle trunk.

Now if Limey could clear his schedule and get the trunk refinished this present will be complete!

Christmas Planning

I love Christmas. It is my favourite time of the year. I love the snow, Starbucks caramel apple cider, sparkly decorations, Christmas carols and everything else about the season.

It is becoming even more fun now that I have two daughters to share the excitement with.

I have some crafts planned for this month, some are gifts others are decorations. I'll post them as they get made.

One thing on my list is an advent calendar. I searched the internet for ideas and eventually decided on making one out of envelopes like the one here.

I ordered the mini wooden clothespins from Etsy. While I wait for them to arrive I'll need to acquire some paper to make the envelopes from.

In each envelope I'll put a note with a holiday related activity on it to do each day leading up to Christmas. I hope to make this a yearly tradition.

What's on your Christmas to do list?
